Technology doesn’t stand still – which makes it very difficult to keep up all of the time. However, I believe it is vitally important for a successful business in this day and age to do its best to keep on top of technology to make it as easy as possible for customers – and potential customers – to find and interact with you. This is not always obvious in the legal sector but I like to think that Woolley & Co has blazed a bit of a trail on this, and others a....

Upon my recent return to the UK from my adopted home of Egypt, I was sadly excited by the prospect of watching a few EastEnders episodes. The excitement turned to horror as I watched an appallingly written episode which showed a frightening lack of proper and relevant research into current family law and social care practice. In my opinion, it was dangerous. In this particular episode, Roxy Mitchell left her three-year-old daughter in the temporary care of one of her teenage family members....

Representing yourself in court in a family law case is looking increasingly appealing for some in the current climate. Changes in Legal Aid rules to slash eligibility for money to support divorce cases is one big reason on the face of it. Another is along similar lines but more general – in the tight economic circumstances, people simply do not believe they can afford to employ a solicitor to pursue their divorce settlement. One obvious alternative is to represent themselves in cou....

Annulments must be one of the most misunderstood areas of family law in the UK, or the least understood, whichever way you want to look at it. At Woolley & Co, it is an area that consistently generates enquiries and yet, last year, we actually completed just two annulments for clients. Many of the enquiries we do get come from the Asian community. It is wrong to think that a marriage can just be “cancelled” with an annulment soon after the nuptials have taken place simply bec....

There seemed to be a sudden proliferation of US TV series a few years ago based around law practices. Ally McBeal, LA Law, JAG, that sort of thing. This seems to have evolved now into more legal investigation programmes, such as CSI, NCIS, and other acronyms. Add to these very popular shows the sheer number of films that include some element of legal process, either a criminal investigation, court case or simply “cops on the edge”, and you can see there is a pretty powerful platf....

The focus of media coverage on the publication of the Family Justice Review last week was the call to ensure child care decisions in family courts were made within six months. A noteworthy point and a sensible decision, though you would hope this is the longest anyone would have to wait for a decision rather than the norm. In his report, former senior civil servant David Norgrove said family justice was inherently slow and children suffered "shocking delays" over decisions ab....

No, it’s not a bad joke – the hot off the press judgment (from 9th November 2011) from the Supreme Court in the case of Kernott v Jones means that the answer may be, umm, we’re not sure... There has been so much debate about the vast differences in the law as it applies to couples who live together rather than get married, and this case is the latest development in a long line of cases where some of the most senior judges in the land have expressed very different views a....

There has been a plethora of sofa interviews and pieces in print about how frequently fathers are being denied access to their children following divorce or separation over the last week or so after the decision not to award any automatic rights to fathers following separation. Everyone seems to be jumping on the band wagon with a whole page given in this week’s Saturday Telegraph for example, to a piece by Louis de Bernieres bemoaning the sad fate of fathers only to reveal he has a shar....

I have been following a recent spate of cases where one parent has sought to relocate out of the country following separation or divorce with great interest. It seemed as though we were witnessing a real change of emphasis with more attention being paid to the effect of reduced contact between children and the parent left behind than had previously been the case. Since 2001, the courts have largely followed a landmark case (Payne v Payne) where a mother was allowed to return to New Zea....
