The best free resources to help you through divorce

When a person decides that they want to divorce, the perceived enormity of the task ahead can be incredibly daunting for many. What do I do first? Which solicitor do I use? How much will it cost? How long will it take? Where am I going to live while this is going on? And those types of things are just the practicalities. They do not take into account the emotional side and concerns about how you’ll cope, how best to handle the situation with the children and a general feeling that your life is changing and will never be the same again.

However, simple as it may sound, the most important thing to remember is not to panic. Thousands of people in the UK go through this process each year and come out the other side to start a new life. And there are plenty of resources out there to help you from the very start, many of which you can access for free to help you make crucial decisions.

Divorce resources library

On our own website, we have tried to create a free, helpful library of resources. We hope that people come here, find them useful and then enquire about engaging our services, but it is their choice. There is no hard sell, hidden charge or signing over of details before being able to access it. As a family law specialist, we believe we have a wider duty to help those going through separation – or thinking about it. By helping people get informed, they can make the decisions that are best for them.

Surviving Family Conflict and Divorce is a handy guide covering all aspects of divorce and acting as a guide for the road ahead. It includes sections on grounds for divorce, property, protecting your assets, financial settlements and arrangements involving children, among many others. You can download it for free from the link above.

Another handy read is our myths book, again which can be downloaded for free or a hard copy requested here. It is effectively an A to Z of common misconceptions about divorce followed by the truth of the situation on issues like common-law-wife, the wife always getting half and the children always going with their mum. We have a dedicated website on the topic of divorce myths where visitors can ask questions also.

Divorce advice videos

We have prepared a number of short videos where some of our experienced lawyers talk on common topics. These include money issues on divorce, children and divorce, how to get a divorce, ex-pat divorce and how to save money on your divorce. The videos give important information in bite-sized chunks.

Family law jargon buster

Jargon can often be baffling when reading about divorce so we have produced a jargon buster to decrypt the legal terminology.

Our links section includes details and web links to a range of support services linked with divorce and we also have a range of help articles across a range of topics, which you can find here.

Some solicitors may try to sign you up before sharing knowledge. Others may charge for access but we believe that the greater the transparency about the process and the more informed people are, the better the outcomes are likely to be for all involved.
