What rights do step-parents have?

Step-parents do not acquire any legal rights by virtue of their marriage to a parent. Generally speaking this doesn’t create a problem although in situations where a step-parent has a lot of day to day care of a step-child on his or her own, or to allay any concerns there might be about emergency situations such as consenting to medical treatment, it can be helpful if a step-parent has parental responsibility

A step-parent can acquire parental responsibility by entering into a parental responsibility agreement with both of the children’s natural parents. Essentially a step-parent can be involved as much as possible in the child’s life provided both of the child’s natural parents’ consent.
